Zootopia or Zootropolis which is what it’s called in Europe is a 2016 American animated film directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush and starring Idris Elba, Kristen Bell & Ginnifer Goodwin. From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox who makes her job even harder. The score is composed by Michael Giacchino.

Disney, Michael Giacchino and animated animals bode well. Giacchino’s scores to Up and Ratatouille went well among the critics and the general public which is why we have such high expectations for this one. The score opens with ‘Stage Fright’ a mixture of effects and percussion. A bit of the jungle really, but what is it? It’s only 40 seconds long so we don’t get the luxury of finding out. The next one ‘Grey’s Uh-Mad At Me’ is downright scary at first reminding me of some of the scary music Giacchino wrote for Lost. The rest of the piece is a dramatic mix of romance and jungle rhythms. This is weird, but also quite good. The score is definitely different than I imagined it would be. ‘Ticket To Write’ is a funky parade that includes some singing. It’s funky alright, and it’s strange, but maybe not in the world of animation.
