Baywatch is a 2017 American action comedy film directed by Seth Gordon and starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron & Alexandra Daddario. It is based on the television series of the same name. Matt Brody is a former Olympic swimmer who wants to join an elite team of lifeguards led by the hulking Mitch Buchannon. Brody thinks he’s a shoo-in, but his casual attitude starts to instantly rub Mitch the wrong way. When drugs and a shady resort owner pose a threat to the bay, Mitch and Matt must put their differences aside to spring into action and save the day. The score is composed by Christopher Lennertz.
Ah, Baywatch. Memories flowing in of long beautiful beaches, ocean in the background and bouncing… people running on the beach. Like pretty much everyone in the world, I watched Baywatch with The Hoff as Mitch Buchannon. Well, Baywatch is back, sort of, but with Dwayne Johnson as the new Mitch Buchannon and that might just work. It looks to me like more of a buddy “cop” thing than saving people at the beach. Remember Baywatch Nights? Oh let’s not. Still, this does look like a lot of fun, and I hope that Lennertz deliver a score that keeps me entertained. The score opens in style with what I assume is a potent mix between Lennertz and Assassin. A totally over-the-board heavy hip hop tune that’s kind of awesome. I wonder if the couple of opening cues with Assassin is indicative of the main score. I definitely think that there are elements of it, and this is the kind of style the music has. ‘Leeds – To The Tower’ which is the second Assassin cue is a lot more laid back, a sort of investigative piece. Not quite as engaging as that opening cue. Beware of the rap at the end if you are afraid of vocals in your scores.
‘Pier Rescue’ is the first solo Lennertz effort and that’s more like the Hollywood action version of ‘Off The Jetty’. The action music works, the percussion and rhythm has really good pacing and it has some nice buildups, but it’s not quite working for me, at least as an action piece. There’s a heroic theme in here that is the takeaway moment of the cue. I’m thinking there’s got to be more to this score than it’s action music and luckily there is. Lennertz uses some classic thematic elements in the emotional parts of this movie like a heroic speech in ‘Tryout Speech’, As for the action, it definitely works best when it mixes action music and hip hop. That gives the score a powerful edge that sets it apart form most action scores these days. Sadly, it’s not something that’s used a lot and I really think the score would be a lot better if it did. It’s a mixed bag, and the score delivers in part, but other parts are not nearly as exciting as it could have been.
