The Angry Birds Movie is a 2016 Finnish-American 3d computer animated film directed by Clay Kaytis & Fergal Reilly and starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride. The film is based upon the video game franchise of the same name. Flightless birds lead a mostly happy existence, except for Red (Jason Sudeikis), who just can’t get past the daily annoyances of life. His temperament leads him to anger management class, where he meets fellow misfits Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb. Red becomes even more agitated when his feathered brethren welcome green pigs to their island paradise. As the swine begin to get under his skin, Red joins forces with Chuck and Bomb to investigate the real reason behind their mysterious arrival. The score is composed by Heitor Pereira.
I have a long history with Angry Birds. I remember when I got it for my iPhone back in the day. It was awesome and fun to play but these days my son is doing all the bird flinging around here and I’m happy with that. The music is also a big part of the franchise with a very recognizable theme and I wonder how they will use it in the film or if they will abandon it all together. I trust Pereira though who did such a fantastic job with Minions last year. The score opens peacefully with birds and gentle orchestral tones with the opening cue ‘Red On The Run’, and the classic Angry Birds theme is being used here. For familiarity that’s pretty great. As the cue name implies, the peace won’t last long and it soon turns into an action piece. Strangely the music reminds me a bit of Newman and Powell’s music for the Ice Age franchise with a bit of Robots mixed in. It’s a lot of fun though. The music goes childish pretty quick with ‘Birthday Party’, but it’s not such a bad thing as one might think. Pereira does a great job hiding the fact that it’s comedy in a way I rarely hear. The cues also quickly shift from one genre to another. It’s a party after all. I love the variety, it’s great.
You know what I would love? I want an Angry Birds point and click adventure game and this music would be just brilliant, of course maybe a bit more low key, but I think it would be brilliant for a game. Speaking of games, the music here is obviously quite different from the games themselves, even with the use of the Angry Birds theme. It should be as well. A movie experience can’t be what the game was and is, at least not yet until you make a cinematic game with a big story mode. Tell you what though, this score is a lively, varied and fun experience overall and more than I would expect from the Angry Birds universe.
